Nintendo games have recently relied on proven franchises to diminishing returns (Super Mario Sunshine) or have been too esoteric for widespread success (Pikmin).

Enter Wario Ware for Gameboy Advance. While loosely based on an existing character, this game is fun in a new way that makes you wonder why it hadn’t been thought of before.

Rather than playing mini games, you play a series of “micro” games in quick succession. Lasting a few seconds they required quick reflexes and often are as simple as pressing a button at the right time.

The graphics are a mixed bag technically, but from a design standpoint they are varied and beautiful—particularly if you are a fan of low-fi artwork. The J-pop music in the game is quite good, not to mention impressive for a non-CD system.

Control is simple—requiring limited D-pad movement or a timed button press—but is quite responsive. The games have different themes from sports to nature to photo-realism to mind-teasers. There are various longer mini games to unlock and you can play each micro game individually to improve your skill.

Wario Ware is a textbook "Green Eggs and Ham" game. Try it, you just might love it.
