Tetris. Unless you've been living under
a rock, you've probably played it. A simple, yet brilliant
game of matching up falling shapes to clear rows of bricks;
clear four rows at once for a 'Tetris' and big points.
Created in the USSR initially on computers, Tetris
was ported to the arcades and consoles (there were two
versions for the NES until Nintendo sued Atari), and seemed
a perfect match for the Gameboy in 1989. And it was. So
in 1998 with the release of the Gameboy Color, Nintendo
revisited one of the top games in their back catalog and
released Tetris DX.
So other than being in color, what has changed and is
it for the better? Just a few things, and yes.
The big change is the ability to save high scores and
user data. So you can compete with others without a link
cable. You can even play against a "virtual"
version of another player in a pseudo versus mode! The
russian style music has been swapped out for contemporary
melodies which are nothing special. Fun fireworks and
space shuttle animations showing how well you've done
in the game round out the package.
Bottom Line: Tetris is a great game and
this is a great version of Tetris. I'm
knocking the final score down a point since everyone has
played the game to death, but it still comes highly recommended.
