One of the original side-scrolling shooters, few games since have equalled R-Type's combination of power-ups, enemies, and color. The levels are fairly simple in design and the enemies follow predetermined patterns. Yet, R-Type was never an easy game or one that had to be memorized to win.

The power-ups included simple weapon increases along with others such as shields called "options" and the front gun turret which could be launched ahead. With several different weapon types and additional missiles, the R-Type could be played in different styles. Along with Raiden, this game remains one of the best shooters of all time.
