Q*bert's Qubes is the little seen sequel to Q*bert that was released for home consoles just before the crash of 1984.

The play field consists of a matrix of cubes, five by five. As Q*bert, you hop around the play field rotating enough of the cubes to the right colors to get a tic-tac-toe. Later, the cubes get more colorful and your goal increases to multiple tic-tac-toes.

Similar to the original, there are enemies to avoid and creatures that mess up the cubes you've already fixed. The game gets hectic, but unlike Q*bert, this sequel has more of an action-puzzle feel to it, since you have to figure out how best to rotate the cubes to get all three sides lined up.

The graphics in the Colecovision version are great. The sprites now have multiple colors and are quite detailed. The music and sound effects are very good and close to arcade quality—only Q*bert's "noise samples" are missing. All the gameplay elements are intact including the introduction and bonus screens.

Q*bert's Qubes, while not a "grail", is a rare game, and many games are rare for a reason. However, Qubes has excellent gameplay and the Colecovision version is well worth tracking down.
