ATARI 2600
The Atari Video Computer System, later known as the Atari 2600, was not the first home
videogame system, yet it was the first to become mass market. Released
in 1977, the VCS didn't really start to sell until a home version
of Space Invaders was released, probably the first 'killer
app' in videogame history.
Many games for the VCS are now very primitive, but somehow can be
considered classics. Combat, Adventure, Yar's Revenge,
Frogger, and even Pacman have a property I can only
call Atariness.
Unfortunately in 1983, so many third party publishers wanted a piece
of the Atari pie, that for every Battlezone or Ms. Pacman
made, many horrible games were released.
This saturated the market causing the home videogame crash in 1984.
