June 2011

E3 is almost upon us, and it’s as good an excuse as any for me to finish getting another issue together. I’m looking forward to seeing what Nintendo has up its sleeve with its next console, but as someone who just ponied up for a 3DS, I’m not in the market for a new system any time soon. Speaking of the 3DS, where are the games? I’m mostly playing DS fare on the system, and the eShop got delayed. I just went on vacation and I ended up loading up my iPad with software, and I can’t help but feel Nintendo left money on the table. I’m sure Microsoft and Sony will have some interesting announcements as well (and I’m sure the Sony conference will be one hour too long), but what I really want is for Sony to drop the price of the PS3. It’s still too pricy for what would be my third system this gen, yet I really want to try out the art house style games on PSN, and so I wait.

In this issue, I review Keystone Kapers for the Atari 2600 as well as Half-Life 2 via The Orange Box on Xbox 360. Fellow contributor Eric is mostly MIA again, but I hear he is enjoying the DLC of Fallout New Vegas in his limited spare time.

In features, I did wrangle up an updated Most Wanted from him, capturing a snapshot of what we are looking forward to, prior to the E3 info dump coming this week. I also went on a Photoshop bender and created several Shockbox Inserts for fellow Neo-Geo MVS fans, including: Bust-a-Move Again EX, Crossed Swords, Galaxy Fight, Gururin, and Neo Bomberman.

In off-site news, Gamespite Quarterly recently published Volume Eight covering all things PlayStation. If you fondly remember being not red “e”, it should be a fun read. I review Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer, and Street Fighter EX plus alpha for the issue, as well as provide mini write-ups for the likes of Colony Wars, Parappa the Rappa and Vib Ribbon. As always, you can buy the sweet hardcopy or wait for the nearly as sweet, yet totally free online version.

February 2011

As we near the end of February, wintertime seems to be waning in the south, yet snow still seems to affect people nearly everywhere else. It's time for another issue of le geek, and once again, I make the empty promise of delivering four times this year.

Portable gaming seems to be the news lately. The Nintendo 3DS has gotten more details and a solid release date, and I’ve gone from E3 excitement by proxy, to wait and see, and back to excitement, culminating in a preorder. Yet I remember the post Feel The Magic XY/XX drought after the DS launch, so the joke may be on me, yet again.

Sony has announced its sequel to the PSP, currently (code)named the NGP. It's both an impressive piece of kit and a solid shot across the boughs of both Nintendo and Apple. But soon after reading about its impressive specs, the excitement wore off, at least for me. Then again I never got around to getting a PSP, and both systems seem to be playing on their respective core strengths, albeit with some modest concessions to try and stave off Apple's increasing presence in the portable space.

In this issue, I review Deathsmiles on the 360, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess on the Wii and the Atari Kid's Controller Sesame Street games for the 2600...from the perspective of my three-year-old son.

The Most Wanted feature get updated as vaporware hall of famer Duke Nukem Forever actually looks to be getting a release!

In off site news, Gamespite Quarterly just published Volume Seven — 8-bit Villains. Spearheaded by Jeremy "Big Boss" Parish, I wrote up the elusive Demogorgon from Forbidden Forest, the rascally Harry Hooligan from Keystone Kapers, the inscrutable Pac-man "Ghosts" and the enigmatic Quotile from Yar's Revenge for the issue, and as always, you can buy the sweet hardcopy or wait for the nearly as sweet, yet totally free online version.
